SPANISH MARTIAL ARTS WEEKEND

August 21st - 23rd, 2009 in New York City

Martinez Academy of Arms and its guest Raven Arts Institute are pleased to host our third Spanish Martial Arts Weekend. Maestros Ramón Martínez, Jeannette Acosta-Martínez, and James Loregia will again be teaching and presenting the most extensive look at Spanish bladed martial culture at any workshop/seminar to date.

At the end of the 16th century, Don Jerónimo de Carranza founded a system of fencing that was to influence the Spanish martial arts through his lifetime and well into the end of the 19th century. This core doctrine remained nearly unchanged for 300 years although the techniques and methods for applying this doctrine varied as successive generations of Spanish "Diestros" adapted the system to suit their needs, according to the conditions of their time and place. To fully explicate how these choices were made we will trace the tenets of Carranza’s doctrine through an examination of selected Spanish fencing treatises.

This seminar will follow a continuum of the theory and how it was applied or incorporated into the use of other types of weapons. The focus will be the technical choices, which are determined by each weapon. During this seminar we will study long-range weapons such as Side-sword, Rapier, Smallsword and Saber as well as the short-range weapons of the Navaja and the stick. Students will select one sword type to focus on throughout the seminar.

Maestro James Loriega will present how the living tradition of the Navaja Sevilliana, the fighting knife of Spain continues to adhere to the tenets of Spanish combative principles and theory. His focus will be to instruct the students on how the same tenets of Spanish swordsmanship are applied to the short-range weapons.

The progression for this three-day seminar will be:

Equipment and Weapons required for the classes

The seminar is structured to accommodate both beginners and advance students. Although we are making allowance for those who do not have all the proper equipment it is extremely important to be properly equipped to achieve the best results. Therefore, all students must bring one of the following weapons: Side-sword, a Spanish type Rapier, a Spanish Smallsword, or Saber.

Students who have their own equipment must bring a pair of gloves for both hands, masks, jackets, gorgets, breast protectors for women, and rigid groin cups for men. Students that do not have their own equipment are asked to wear comfortable work out clothing.

We have a very limited amount of swords to lend to those who do not have them. They will be lent out on a first come first serve basis. We will provide walking sticks and Navaja trainers.
